Coartem®*
Coartem® is a fixed-dose artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT). Regulatory approval for Coartem® in the treatment of adults and children (>5 kg bodyweight) with uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria, was granted as early as 1999 by the regulatory authorities of Switzerland and the EU.
Each Coartem® tablet contains 20 mg artemether and 120 mg lumefantrine. Artemether has a rapid onset of action and is rapidly eliminated, whereas lumefantrine is eliminated more slowly.1 Consequently, the combination rapidly clears parasites, while also preventing the reappearance of parasites in the blood.4
Coartem® consistently achieves 28-day PCR-corrected cure rates of over 95% in randomised, controlled trials conducted in malaria-endemic areas.3,4,6,7
Coartem® provides high cure rates in patients with uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria, even in areas of widespread parasite resistance to other antimalarials.3,4,6
* Coartem® is also known under the tradename Riamet® in some countries.
